Tips to get the perfect vacation home experience:
Finding your perfect rental:
- Summer months are high season in the Sullivan's Island area. Reserve your Sullivan's Island rental property in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for veterans. Ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Sullivan's Island visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guides have offers and deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.
Filter your search:
- Select a designated group leader, choose your dates, and select a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Summertime Sullivans Island Retreat! has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible on booking pages. Otherwise, call the property owner before you book the home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Visiting for a single attraction or event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or costs applied to your invoice.
Additional considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
- At Check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent lots of problems.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all belongings. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a great vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
